Social Media

Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg on the 4th February 2004. He created this social media website when he was at Harvard University. The vision that Mark Zuckerberg had for Facebook was to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together as a whole. They introduced to users that they can keep in touch with family and friends, keep up with news from around the world, product announcements, events and stories.
After 6 years, it was visited by more than 400 million people per month and by 2017, statistics show that Facebook had more than 1.94 billion active users globally each month. This being the biggest social media website in the world.
Facebook make money by using digital advertisements such as H&M, Wish.com and so on. In 2017 Facebook make £39,942,000,000 alone. They also make money by linking Facebook with virtual game companies. This can be games such as CandyCrush, Pirate Kings, Criminal Case, etc.

There are many problems that are involved in using Facebook. The biggest issue within Facebook is that young children are targeted by paedophiles. This is because paedophiles use Facebook profiles to contact younger children and send them inappropriate messages and ask them to meet up. Unfortunately certain things cannot be done about this as you need to report these people and due to certain circumstances, some people can’t report them. For example they may feel embarrassed to tell someone or they may be threatened not to tell anyone. Another issue with Facebook is that information gets shared with third parties. This meaning that if you and a friend are commenting on a post about baby products or on messenger discussing baby products then an advertisement from Wish.com may appear on your page showing different types of baby products that you have just spoken about.

The main social use is to help stay in touch with friends and family, even if they are across the other side of the world. It is easy to share information and  photos, just a very effect way of letting people know whats happening even without them being there. The main feature now is that is now interlinked with twitter and instagram, so  you can use facebook to go to instagram instead of having to use an app. It is very efficient, and up to date with the running of technology.

What is the USP of Facebook?
The unique selling point of Facebook would be its structure, all profiles are created the same and it’s easy to use for any age plus it’s free to use.
Are there any current ethical issues with Facebook?

One ethical issue that has been floating around was that Facebook was conducting psychological experiments on their users without their consent. Facebook has denied these allegations claiming that in their terms and conditions there is no such information about these experiments. It has also came to our knowledge that Cambridge Analytica has been in the news regarding the issue of Brexit, it has also said that they have breached the data security since 2015. Cambridge Analytica was suspended after there breach of data this month (april, 2018). Three point four billion was spent on brexit leave campaigns to encourage people to support Eu referendum.

Through the years Facebook has changed their designed from 2004 - 2017
